Ranabir grew up in the state of Assam, north-east India. He graduated from the University of Delhi with a B.Sc in Zoology and followed it up with an M.S. (Biological Sciences) from JNCASR, Bengaluru. His master’s thesis focused on studying astrocytes in intellectual disability. He eventually shifted his focus to cell biology and spent over a year in the lab of Prof. Chandan Goswami (NISER, Bhubaneswar) where he studied the roles of thermo- and mechano-sensitive ion channels (TRPV4 and TRPM8) in different physiological responses, ranging from bone homeostasis, mitochondrial dynamics, and microglial functionalities. He eventually moved to Institut Pasteur, Paris in 2022 for his doctoral studies (supported by the PPU international doctoral program) in the lab of Prof. Chiara Zurzolo. His dissertation focused on understanding neuron-microglia interactions via Tunneling Nanotubes (TNTs) under Synucleinopathic stress. In the Lukens lab, he is interested in understanding the contribution of microglia in neuroimmune responses in Alzheimer's, and the fundamental intracellular principles governing them. Outside the lab, he enjoys playing badminton, biking, reading a good book (with even better music playing in the background) while sipping on his favorite alcoholic beverage!
